Flutter, which offers eyelash extensions in spas at Harrods and the Dorchester, is now franchising the business as a service that clients can have in the comfort of their home.
The founder, Kathryn Popplestone opened her first outlet in the Urban Retreat at Harrods in November, 2009 and the service is now also available through mobile eyelash artists within the M25 seven-days-a-week between 7.30am and 9pm.
A biochemistry graduate, Popplestone has worked in the beauty industry for more than 10 years and has six years experience of the eyelash extension market. Her business has a strong, regular base of high-profile clients and A-list celebrities.
“Flutter was founded on the basis of the demand for high quality lash extensions,” she says. “We were chosen as the exclusive lash brand in Harrods and our unique selling point is that we now offer the treatment in the comfort of clients’ own homes.
“As well as the day-to-day running of the business, I impart my extensive knowledge to the rest of the Flutter team through initial, as well as continuous, high quality training and mentoring,” she says.
The franchise is being developed by the consultancy, Franchise Link and initially a franchisee is being sought for North London.
Flutter lashes are available in different volumes and length, and are pre-curled. The application technique is exclusive to Flutter and not simply about laying lashes on top of existing lashes. The eyelash artist isolates each lash, working individually on every row to create a natural extension to the existing lashes.
The application takes around 90 minutes, depending on the number of the client’s lashes and the desired result.
Extensions last the full life-cycle of natural lashes – 60 days, which is the time it takes a natural lash to grow and fall out.
Touch-up appointments are recommended every two to four weeks to fill in areas where natural lashes have fallen out and new lashes have grown.
After the eye area has been prepared, synthetic C-curl lashes are applied individually to the natural lashes. About 40 – 90 eyelashes are applied to each eye with the synthetic lash being adhered to the natural lash by a specially-formulated adhesive. This is then sealed with a coating to protect the extensions from sweat, dirt, and pollution. The treatment results in thicker, longer, and more voluminous lashes.
To maintain the lashes between appointments, the client is recommended to use a longer life coating sealant, which is initially applied as part of the treatment. The sealant, which should be applied every other day, is extremely effective in helping the glue to cure, and hold the synthetic lashes onto the natural lashes.
It will also help to protect the synthetic lashes from water, perspiration and other elements that may break down the adhesive, and it helps to keep the lashes looking dark and shiny.
The treatment is not suitable for those who are allergic to adhesives, or have had chemotherapy during the previous six months. Natural lashes are, of course, a pre-requisite.
Extensions are priced from £150 to £250 and follow-up appointments from £80 to £100.
