How to Franchise Internationally
By Martin Mendelsohn

Franchising is the ideal system for taking a business into new countries, but the failure rate is surprisingly high. Martin Mendelsohn identifies the causes of failure. He discusses the options available and charts the course to success. "This revised and updated version of the book will be of enormous help to any franchisor, either taking their concept out of the UK or bringing it in from overseas, providing, as it does, a complete list of the 'do's' and don'ts' based on Martin's extensive experience," says Cathryn Hayes, head of franchising at HSBC Bank.

If your ambition goes beyond that of franchisee and you would like to become a franchisor, but don’t already have a business that can be franchised, you can import a proven system from abroad. As the master franchisee of a foreign system you will, in effect, be acting as the UK franchisor with the responsibility for recruiting and running your own national network with the help of the parent franchisor.

The potential for a master franchisee is, of course, much greater than that of a franchisee, but so are the stakes and you will need more capital and resources. Some of the largest franchises in the UK today are foreign systems run by master franchisees.

To learn more about master franchising, read Challenges of Franchising in the Global Market by Chris Wormald in the Franchise World 2008: British Franchise Directory and Guide. The directory also includes a specimen master franchise contract by Mark Abell which will give you a valuable insight into the terms of such contracts and obligations of the two parties.
