Franchise World: 2009 British Franchise Directory and Guide (220 pages) UK Annual Directory, 25th Edition
This directory is essential for newcomers to UK franchising, whether a prospective franchisee or franchisor. It lists more than 1,100 franchises now trading in Britain, and includes over 65 pages of advisory articles by the leading franchise specialists in business consultancy, the law and the banks.
To make it easy for readers to draw up a short list of franchises they would like to consider, the directory lists them by trade category and alphabetically - many with full details, such as setting-up costs, initial fees, ongoing royalties, and projected turnover and profits.
In addition to the advisory articles explaining every aspect of the franchise system, the directory contains specimen franchise contracts (including a master franchise agreement) and franchise glossary. The foreword is by Sir Bernard Ingham, president of the BFA. Now in its 25th year, the directory is the most authoritative in its field. Contents

How to Evaluate a Franchise (84 pages) By Martin Mendelsohn
If you’re thinking of buying a franchise, this guide will tell you what you need to know in order to make the right choice.
It will help you assess whether self-employment and franchising, in particular, will suit you personally and explains how to avoid the pitfalls.
Franchising is not as simple as it may seem and calls for a considerable, long-term commitment.
Although it has a self-regulatory body, the BFA membership is voluntary and there is no franchise legislation to protect you. You, therefore, need to take every care in choosing a franchise. This guide will help you make the right choice.

How to turn Your Business into the
Next Global Brand
By Brian Duckett and Paul Monaghan
Two of Britain’s most experienced franchise consultants provide a practical step-by-step guide for businesses who want to follow the likes of McDonald’s and Holiday Inn and turn to franchising to develop their single outlet into a multinational giant.
As principals of Britain’s largest franchise consultancy, Howarth Franchising, they have called on their long experience of guiding hundreds of clients successfully through the process of setting up and piloting their first franchise units through to establishing a UK network and in some cases going on to franchise internationally.
They point out that franchisors tend to be very open about how they operate and are happy to share their experiences of both the good and bad times. This has enabled the authors to produce a book that can help both prospective and practising franchisors at any stage in developing their system to avoid the heartaches and costly mistakes that can occur.
The authors begin by looking at what type of business is likely to make a successful franchise and the construction of the network development plan, along with the operations manual and franchise agreement.
The bulk of the book is devoted to practical franchise management where the topics range from recruiting and selecting franchisees and helping them with the business plan they will need to get finance through to training, monitoring and motivating them. These chapters mirror the subjects of the workshops for the diploma in franchising course run by the Howarth Franchise Training Centre.
Finally, the book deals with expanding the business internationally and two topics seldom covered by franchise authors - the sale of a franchising system and conversely the purchase of a system by an entrepreneur taking the fast-track to becoming a franchisor.
